Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Homecoming feels a smaller picture than many of the recent Marvels and that's no bad thing. There's no threat of the end of the world, no alien invaders, no magical dimensions, alien planets or astral realms. The Marvel movies have become increasingly ambitious and out-there and it's refreshing to have a film that brings things back to the small scale and the domestic.

Description - Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) Several months after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker, with the help of his mentor Tony Stark, tries to balance his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens, New York City while fighting crime as his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man as a new threat, the Vulture, emerges. In spite of Spider-Man's monstrous, multigenerational fan base, Sony has attempted to give an amazing character a similarly incredible story on the extra large screen. Arachnid Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004) were the makings of a strong establishment, yet then 2007's Spider-Man 3 appeared to cast a dull spell over the superhuman's true to life inheritance. Not exclusively was the film a harsh end to a once-encouraging set of three, yet it was trailed by a disappointing, too early reboot in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, a forcefully fair spin-off of said reboot, and after that a progression of deferrals

The Marvel superhero character Spider-Man (aka Peter Parker) has been done his circuit on the big screen for many years, with different iterations being brought to each installment of everyone’s favorite web slinger. Based on its comic book source material, which was created by Marvel legend Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Spider-Man made his leap onto the silver screen back in 2002 in the film Spider-Man with actor Toby Maguire playing the title character as well as actress Kristen Dunst as Mary Jane, and actor James Franco as Harry Osborne. This first cinematic iteration (at the so-called “Dawn of the Superhero film” genre we all know of today), received positive reviews and was high successful at the box office (roughly making $820 million globally), which prompted the studio to churn out two more follow-up sequels with 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2007’s Spider-Man 3. After that, Sony / Columbia Pictures (the studio behind these films) went silent with the character of Spider-Man, observing (and watching) as now popular Marvel Cinematic Universe began to grow and dominate the box office; amassing comic books rights for their films and gaining a steady incline of moviegoer fandom. It was soon decided that Sony Pictures would return to the superhero genre by “rebooting” their Spider-Man franchise from scratch and released The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, with actor Andrew Garfield playing the role of Peter Parker / Spider-Man and actress Emma Stone playing his love interest of Gwen Stacey. The film did make a splash with critics and fans and amassed a very profitable return (over $750 million at the global box office), which prompted the studio make a sequel film with 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. After that, however, Sony Pictures had several ideas planning for Spider-Man, ranging from another sequel, to spin-offs, and even rebooting franchise again, but nothing ever material realized as Marvel’s MCU, which now was under the control of parent company Disney, continued to flourish and expand. Eventually, after some time and many rumors, Sony / Columbia Pictures and Disney finally came to an agreement with the rights to Spider-Man, allowing the character to appear in the MCU franchise and did so in 2016’s blockbuster juggernaut Captain America: Civil War, with actor Tom Holland playing the role of Spider-Man. Now, with this being the third iteration of the comic book superhero, Marvel Studios (along with Sony / Columbia Pictures) and director Jon Watts present the first solo Spider-Man feature under the MCU banner with the film Spider-ManHomecoming. Does this newest Spider-Man movie deliver on launching the superhero new heights or is it time to retire everyone’s “Friendly Neighborhood” webslinger?

Toome's activity has not even been deemed important enough to get the Avengers involved, Peter seen as a promising prospect by Stark and his loyal right hand Happy (Jon Favreau) but no more than that. Peter thinks knowing Stark will open doors to the big time and a slot on the Avengers but instead he's largely ignored. This is very much a Peter starting out on his journey as hero, much of the film's jeopardy as much Peter's fault as the villains he's pursuing. Struggling to balance his school commitments and his secret life as a hero, this is a green and fallible Spider-Man, very much in keeping with how the character was envisioned by Stan Lee back in the 1960s. Holland is perfect in the part, conveying smarts, humour, awkwardness, charm and frustration. Yes, he looks older than 15 but he does get across the impetuousness and yearning that a 15 year old would possess. He's great when not in the costume, navigating a normal life of fetching food from the deli, revising for his Spanish test and hanging out with his nerdy pal making a Lego Death Star. As is always the way with Peter, he's in love though not with a Gwen or an MJ but with Liz (Laura Harrier), the organiser of the homecoming dance and head of the quiz team. The scenes set in the high school are fun, with a supporting cast of nicely sketched characters, a very new take on Flash and the sardonic Michelle (Zendaya). On the down side, Marisa Tomei gets a far smaller share of the story than I would have expected, though she does well with what she's given, especially in helping Peter prepare for the homecoming dance. If there is a breakout star apart from Holland, it's Batalon's Ned, Peter's buddy and a heck of a lot of fun throughout, especially once he discovers Peter's secret.

We strongly recommend you to watch newly released movies in theatre for best experience.
